Janmashtami
Janmashtami celebrates birth of Lord Krishna and is observed on the eight day of shravan month(August/September) as per hindu calendar. Janmashtami is also known as Gokulashtami, Krishnasthami, Srijayanti.
Janmashtami in Maharashtra is known as Dahi Handi and is celebrated with full enthusiasm by all. A clay pot (handi) is filled with buttermilk and is positioned at a convenient height. A human pyrmaid is made & the topmost person on the pyramid tries to break the handi.
Different groups of youngsters called govinda travel around in trucks to break many handis they can. These handis are set up in severa parts of the city.
Political parties sponsor dahi handi and give hefty rewards to the groups who can break the toughest handi. The prize money amounts to lacs of rupees.
